Primary healthcare is provided in the community by 22 General Practices with almost 150 GPs and over 100 Practice Nurses who look after the health of over 105,000 enrolled patients throughout the Nelson-Tasman region.
The Nelson-Tasman enrolled population ethnicity breakdown is 84% European, 9% Maori, 1% Pacific, 3% Asian and 2% Other. 9% are Quintile 5 (NZ deprivation score 9 and 10). 29% are aged between 45 and 64 years old and 22% are aged 65 years old or older.
Many of our services are directed towards developing the workforce, looking after individuals and supporting people to get well and live well in the community. We also focus on health promotion; targeting issues that affect the people and communities within our community.
Nelson Bays Primary Health also has responsibility for ensuring that current challenges in community healthcare are being met. These challenges include child and adolescent health, immunisation, mental health, long-term conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular/heart disease and healthy ageing.
